Founded in Copenhagen in 2015 by Emil Thorup, HANDVÄRK was born from a desire to explore a different side of Scandinavian design.

At a time when Nordic design was largely defined by wood, Emil Thorup looked towards other natural materials — marble, steel, brass and leather — and made them the foundation of a new expression of Scandinavian furniture.

The result is HANDVÄRK: a distinctive approach to Danish design, where simplicity, functionality and strong materials come together.

An autodidact designer with a lifelong passion for architecture and aesthetics, Emil Thorup draws particular inspiration from the Bauhaus movement and its belief that great design should be both beautiful and functional.

This philosophy remains at the heart of HANDVÄRK.

The designs are pared back to their essential elements, allowing the materials, proportions and construction to speak for themselves. Nothing is added without purpose.

The result is furniture with a distinctly Nordic character — minimal, functional and warm, yet with a strong architectural expression.

Materials are the starting point

We believe honest materials should be allowed to be themselves.

Genuine marble, solid brass, steel and carefully selected leather are central to the HANDVÄRK universe. Natural variations, textures and patina are not imperfections, but part of what makes each piece unique.

We choose materials for their beauty, but also for how they age and live with the people who use them.

From the first sketch to the finished piece, every HANDVÄRK design is created with longevity in mind.

We work closely with skilled manufacturers and craftspeople to find the right balance between contemporary production methods and traditional craftsmanship. By focusing on the essential, we aim to create furniture that can remain relevant long after trends have passed.
